Choosing an AI coding CLI

Compare Codex, Claude Code, and Gemini CLI by your existing account, workflow, setup needs, and constraints.

Official sources checked · SuperCLI editorial guidance

The short answer

Start with a tool you can already access and evaluate its changes on one small task. Codex, Claude Code, and Gemini CLI can all assist with code. Account access, team policy, and permissions are better starting points than repository stars.

Choose by the task

Check prerequisites and limits

When it fits
Useful for reading and editing a local repository and extending the workflow into scripts or CI.
Before you start
Confirm an available ChatGPT sign-in or another documented authentication method, then choose the installation method for your system.
Limits and tradeoffs
Capabilities and limits depend on your account and authentication method. An installed CLI alone does not guarantee offline model access.

Tool details →
When it fits
Useful when you already have Claude Code access and want to connect terminal work with development tools.
Before you start
Check subscription, Console, or supported-provider access. Native and npm installation paths have different prerequisites.
Limits and tradeoffs
Do not apply one installation method's runtime requirements to every method. Review executed commands and file changes.
When it fits
Useful when Google sign-in, Gemini API credentials, or Vertex AI fits your account setup.
Before you start
Current installation guidance lists Node.js 20+. Each authentication route has its own account or project setup requirements.
Limits and tradeoffs
Google sign-in, API keys, and Vertex AI have different setup and quota models. Choose a route before comparing costs.

Start with one small task

  1. Choose a bounded task, such as explaining a function or adding a test, and check repository state first.
  2. Sign in using official guidance and review file, command, and network permissions before starting.
  3. Read the diff and run existing project checks before accepting changes. Generated code still needs verification.

Check the terms of your selected sign-in method and model service. These are workflow-based recommendations, not independent performance rankings. Installing a CLI does not grant unlimited or free model access.
